Geocaching and enjoying nature!

Lately it’s been getting really bitter and cold out with Winter approaching. I struggle with my mental health during the colder months and tend to isolate myself because being inside and being warm feels a lot better than being cold and miserable. We’ve had some days that reached around 3C but most days are below 0 now. It’s been really difficult for me already and it’s only going to get colder. Today was weird, I stepped outside and it was 12C!! Usually we only get this warmth when it’s raining and there’s not a lot we can do in the rain, but the sun was shining. My husband took the kids out to play ball hockey in the driveway while I poked around in the woods behind our house. Eventually we decided the weather was too nice to stay home and we packed the kids into the jeep to head to the Wetlands Nature Trails for some fresh air and nature therapy!

As soon as we hit the trail we noticed a tiny painted stone sitting near one of the wood carvings. I told my husband I had heard about people putting these painted rocks around town for people to find and we agreed it was a really neat concept, like a massive easter egg hunt. It reminded me of Geocaching, which has a similar concept, if you haven’t heard of Geocaching, pleeeeease do yourself a solid and check out! So yeah, we decided to see if any Geocaches were hidden in the area while we were there and sure enough there was one listed further in the trail, so we punched it into the GPS and made our way there. Along the way we noticed more of these painted rocks, the kids were going crazy for them, keeping points for each one they found, admiring them for a minute, and then putting them back for others to enjoy.

We had to go into the woods off the trail to find the Geocache but luckily it was an easy find and I spotted it just as hubby walked past. It was tucked inside a cute old tree stump and was in really good condition! Hopefully this cache will be around for a few good years. We left something and took a small homemade heart. Then we set out to finish the trail. By the end of our walk we had found at least thirty or more of these painted stones, it was an absolutely fantastic day!

DIY: Pressed Leaf Clay Bowls

Another fun activity I did over the weekend, it was a first time experience for me but I will definitely be working with clay moving forward! I bought Natural Modelling Clay at the dollar store, two bricks for $1.50 each. This was MORE than enough, I brought both bricks to my best friend’s and we were both able to make tons of fun creations and still had almost an entire brick left over. She made a really nice Moon Phase chime and a teepee incense burner, I made my leaf bowl, an Awen pendant, and a tiny skull for shits and giggles.

You can make literally whatever you want, but here is how I made the leaf bowl!

What you need:
– Natural Modelling Clay
– A sizeable leaf to press
– A knife
– Plastic Wrap
– A bowl
– Acrylic Paint
– A rolling pin (Or wine bottle)

Step One:
– Knead your clay until it’s soft and pallable
– Roll it out flat until it’s your desired thickness
– Take your leaf and press it down onto your clay
– Run over it with the rolling pin until it’s definitely imprinted on the clay
– Gently peel your leaf off your clay
– Using your knife, cut out the outside shape of the leaf like the image below

Step Two:
– Gently lift your clay leaf off the surface, be careful not to smush it!
– Place plastic wrap in a bowl and then place the clay leaf in the bowl so the leaf has a rounded bowl shape as shown below

Step Three:
– Allow 24hours for your clay creations to dry and harden

Step Four:
– Paint! You can paint these however you like, I do not recommend using water in your paints as it could cause the clay to smudge
– You may choose to use a clear coat, you can use Krylon clear coat spray or even clear nail varnish. This is completely optional.

Step Five:
– Enjoy your new creation, use it for holding herbs, jewellery, or stack them up by size for a decorative piece!

Changes on The Horizon

I’ve taken a position on the forum I’ve worked for since 2013 which will be pretty time consuming but I am looking forward to helping the site progress. I know not everyone in the community will be pleased about the decision to promote me but in terms of longevity and experience I was the most reasonable option and I certainly wasn’t going to reject the opportunity to help. I look at this site like my baby and they say it takes a village to raise a child, so I am hoping I will have enough support from my staff team and the community that we can make a big difference! Though, I’m hoping my best friend who has been working for the site since 2014, will be promoted to the same position eventually/someday too. I feel like as a team we are much more motivated, effective, and have the ability to get things done FASTER, since we’d be sharing the workload.

Aside from those changes I’ve challenged myself to do more reading, writing, and art. Just things that are mentally stimulating and gratifying for me. So I’ve read two books and am halfway through my third, since January 6th. I’ve started writing some fanfiction because why not, and I’ve been messing around with Adobe Illustrator on my ipad! It’s going to be a really long Winter so doing these things is really keeping me sane.

They say your frontal lobe isn’t fully developed until you’re 25 and guess what? I’m going to be 25 in March! Happy Birthday (and fully developed frontal lobe!) to me! I’m low-key hoping Hubby buys me a new kindle since the one I have doesn’t have a built in light, making night time reading impossible.

Have a good Monday folks! 🙂

Facebook Hiatus, Quitting Smoking, Wreck This Journal, and more!

So I’ll start off with the bad news and then counter it with some good news! The bad news is that I am leaving Facebook for an undetermined amount of time. Sorry to those hoping for some juicy gossip, there is no delicious reason why besides the fact that I want to take some time away from Facebook chaos to spend with my family while my husband is on Summer Leave. He will be home for 31 days and I want to make the best of it. Facebook tends to stress me out, I’d rather go outside and plant something than sit inside brooding over internet drama. So that’s what I’m going to do! That being said, I’ll probably return sooner than I plan but who knows. I am hoping to at least dedicate a few Facebook free weeks to my family and my house.

Now for some good news! I did quit smoking. It’s reeeeeally hard but I am trying my best to hang in there. When I think about it too much it bothers me so I am trying to push it from my mind most of the time. I really need to quit for my family, but mostly for myself. I want more years on this beautiful planet. I don’t want to shorten my life with something as silly as smoking. So I need to rally up all my will power and cut it out.

Finally, the most exciting part of my week! I am doing “wreck this journal” it’s a super fun, hilarious, creative, series by Keri Smith. She has done a few different versions of Wreck This Journal. I am hoping to try them all. So far I am having tons of fun with it. 🙂 The concept is adorable and really forces you to step out of your comfort zone and just WRECK the journal. Like taking it with you in the shower, or rolling it down a hill, for example 😛 Here are some of the pictures so far, I might continue posting them here but I’ll more than likely stick to posting them on Instagram.

Friends who can art

I’m so lucky to be connected to so many talented people all over the world who are not only immensely talented, but generous with their talents. A while back I had a friend make a portrait of me which I intended to use here on my blog (and did for a while, I still use it on the coverphoto of my Facebook page!) and recently, she did an updated one since my looks have changed a bit in the last little while. Here is the link to her deviantart if you want to admire her work and here are the pieces she did for me:

The one she did for me this week:

And the one she did for me in September 2014:

I cut my hair and other things.

I didn’t cut other things, just my hair, just to clarify. Looks alright, eh?
Screen Shot 2015-06-18 at 3.51.49 PMSo, life updates –
I cut my hair
I started smoking again
Am I going through a midlife crisis?

I started drawing again?

I can’t believe I started smoking again. I seriously thought after a year and a half without a single puff, that I would never smoke again. But it’s funny how addiction works, one single cigarette and I went spiralling back into the habit, justifying it the whole way. I remembered it like I had never quit. But I have this fabulous best friend who bought me an e-cigarette, I’ll be trying that out as often as possible. I don’t want to be a smoker, I just need to get myself into the right mind-set to stop.

The hair cut was a completely spontaneous decision. I was like “wow my hair is really dry and dead and nothing seems to be working to help it!”. So I cut it. Simple as that. I put it in two pigtails as even as possible and chopped it. I actually love it, I feel free somehow. Sometimes it’s the smallest changes that have the biggest impact.

As for the small updates, I swear more interesting things have happened in my life but I can’t really think of any right now. I’m forever stuck with writer’s block these days. I actually am writing a book though, now that I think about it. It’s sort of a Sci-Fi post apocalyptic theme. Maybe I’ll post some teasers some time 😉 For now I just write about a paragraph or two a day, and do a lot of sketching, like I mentioned. I have been drawing again! I sketched a picture of Lebron James for the hubby for Father’s Day and I have been practicing lips and mermaids. ^_^

Also, I’m going to try to use my tumblr and twitter more often, so follow me on those!
